But he’s too big of a coward to step up and claim his prize. Not a peep yet about the passage of prop 8 in California, but then again it isn’t surprising from a person who has no integrity and even less character. Besides, he has his legions of adoring groupies to spin wildly ludicrous tales to explain away why some of his most ardent supporters helped strip millions of gay people of a basic civil right. Even some of those gay people themselves.
Until recently, one of those toadies was Andrew Sullivan, who is one of the most loathesome creatures on this earth. But even he can see the hypocrisy of a campaign that promised hope and change, but brought discrimination and intimidation.
The final analysis is pretty clear. There was a big overlap between new, largely black Obama voters and the forces for discrimination against gay married couples and our families:
From the Sacramento Bee:
Ironically, however, a mathematical analysis of voting and exit poll data indicates very strongly that it was exactly that pro-Obama surge that spelled victory for Proposition 8.
When Proposition 8’s passage first became apparent, it was widely assumed that hundreds of thousands of first-time or occasional voters had turned out to vote for Obama, then left the rest of their ballots blank, thus allowing more conservative voters to dominate ballot measures.
In fact, however, there was very little voting drop-off. There are still some late absentee and provisional ballots to be counted, but as of Monday, 10.96 million votes had been tallied in the presidential race and 10.85 million for and against Proposition 8.
And as if there were any question that it was Obama voters who pushed Prop 8 over the top…
Proposition 8, in fact, garnered 1.6 million more votes than McCain received. And, it’s apparent, many of those votes – enough to make the difference – came from African American and Latino voters drawn to the polls by Obamamania.
An overwhelming, but not surprising, 94 percent of the former supported Obama, exit polling indicated, while 74 percent of Latinos voted for the winner. But 70 percent of African Americans also voted for Proposition 8, as did 53 percent of Latino voters.
Last week, however, 10 percent of voters were African American while 18 percent were Latino, and applying exit poll data to that extra turnout reveals that the pro-Obama surge among those two groups gave Proposition 8 an extra 500,000-plus votes, slightly more than the measure’s margin of victory.
I have to add that I find it a bit disquieting that Latinos are lumped in as contributing to the passage of the bill. While the majority of latinos did vote for the proposition, which indicates an intolerable level of homophobia in the latino community as well, it is not nearly as high as the level of support from the black community, which also voted for Obama almost 10 to 1. White support neared 50 percent as well. I am not arguing that homophobia is only a problem for African Americans. But no other voting block voted for Obama in such high numbers either.
The excuse being tossed about this past couple of days is that it isn’t black homophobia, but rather the importance of the church in the black community. This is another lie to avoid taking responsibility for bigotry. Homophobia is homophobia no matter what the source. And I think that they are overstating the role that religion plays in determining the level of homophobia. As Sully points out, other religious minorities weren’t so intolerant:
Black liberals were the critical voting bloc. Jewish liberals voted overwhelmingly against Prop 8, to offer a simple contrast. Obama has always opposed marriage equality, even splitting with his own church on the issue. In California, he got his way.
From the JTA article:
On Proposition 8, Jewish Angelinos voted 78 percent against the ban while only 8 percent supported the ban, according to the survey of 1,200 voters in 50 precincts. The remainder declined to respond. The Jews’ vote against the ban was the highest proportion of any ethnic or religious group.
California voters approved the proposition, 52-48 percent.
Los Angeles Jewish voters also voted overwhelmingly for Barack Obama, giving him 78 percent of votes to 20 percent for John McCain. The president-elect’s Jewish numbers in Los Angeles matched the percentage nationwide.
So Jewish Supporters of Obama voted in almost the exact same numbers against the propostion. It appears that it was basically one group that supported Obama and also Prop 8 in overwhelming numbers. It is time for them to own that bigotry, and it is time for Obama to own it as well.
SILENCE=DEATH

Great analysis, Gary. Keep it going!

In other words, Obama’s GOTV ensured the passage of Prop 8.
What would it have cost BO to tell his voters to vote against it? It’s not like he would have lost CA, damn it.

It’s like that great old line about “They came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew, so I said nothing. Then they came for the communists, but I was not a communist, so I said nothing.” And after a series of other groups, who meant nothing, they came for me, and there was no one left to say anything.
Obama has been condoning vitriolic bigotry against women, gays, and _blacks_. (What else do you call it when somebody cheapens the crime of racism into nothing but name-calling?) He’s been doing this from Day One. But his supporters were the chosen people, so they said nothing.
The only question now is how long will they be able to keep up the denial. The track record so far, such as the Prop H8 fiasco, suggests they’ll do whatever it takes to blame anyone except Obama(TM).

like 10 days before the elections, i got this VOTE YES on 8 flyer. (surprised where did they found me, because the dem. party never sent me anything till then- also never attended church, no affiliation-my black partner never got one).
on one side is BO in fron of mic. with michelle in the background laughing. a big title “i’m not in favor of the gay marriage” and also in smaller type his comment at saddleback church …. “nbow, for me as a christian, it’s also a sacred union. god’s in the mix”
the verso has 4 black pastors and a quote for each:
pastor tony dockery——st. stephen baptist church
pastor ed smith-zoe——christian fellowship-whittier
bishop donald e. green——sf christian center
dr. phillip goudeaux—–calvary christian center
in the left bottom corner, there is line about Biden ….. a quote from the VP debate …
and on the right:
dennis kucinich and mike gravel r the only dem. candidates that support gay marriage. and underlined ….obama does not support gay marriage
go figure

I’m not surprised he isn’t owning his affect on the passage of this discriminatory legislation. What surprises me and continues to surprise me is the number of LGBT people who supported him and who have not yet publicly denounced him! Just like I, as a black woman, would never imagine supporting an outright bigot, why would any LGBT person support an admitted homophobe?

You know what the tr0lls are saying? “Well, Hillary was against gay marriage too, so the same thing would have happened if she had been elected. So, you should be condemning her too!!!11!!!!”
Um, huh?
IF a giant, easily identified bloc of Hillary’s voters had been told to vote for Prop 8, and she did nothing to stop it, and that bloc of voters were responsible for its passage, I would be excoriating Hillary just as loudly as I’m yelling at Obama.
But we have to deal with what actually happened, not what maybe would have happened! What planet are these people on?
November 13, 2008 at 12:52 pm
It wasn’t Senator Clinton whose voice was used in an uncontested robo-call to get out the vote for Prop. 8. I don’t know what planet they are on, madamab, but the atmosphere there is mighty thin, I reckon.

Dan Savage did a fantastic job in an apperance on Cooper Anderson’s show on CNN. Here’s a link to the Youtube in case you may have missed it:

When has Obama ever taken responsibility for anything other than to dismiss? Do I hear the word “never”?

Excellent vid of Dan Savage. Of course you won”t hear Anderson Cooper saying anything about it either!

And in case you wondered why I wrote that about Andy…

fredster, that list is both depressing and mortifying. What a sorry representation of the gay community if you ask me.
November 13, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Obama’s cowardice knows no bounds. He only steps out on the ledge to attack the Bush administration and his policies – even though he is in favor of a majority of them (Iraq war, domestic spying, big bankster bailouts, etc…)
November 13, 2008 at 3:42 pm
The people who refuse to speak the truth about the pass blacks have been given may as well count themselves as opponents of all civil rights. Not standing up for ones own rights or the rights of others doesn’t make you a martyr for the Obamanation or even a team player. It makes you the enemy of democracy.
November 13, 2008 at 4:05 pm
That video of Dan Savage is excellent. I am sorry I couldn’t watch the whole thing, but Perkins made me ill. He cannot see how his view is discriminatory? I call bullshit. He doesn’t want to see, and he is willing to do all sorts of mental acrobatics to make sure he doesn’t see.

Gary, you would think that at least (and they may have) Annie Leibovitz, Chi-chi Larue, Geffen and Bryan Singer would have publicly voice a “no” stance. They are all in the arts/film community. Well chi-chi does male porn, but…. just sayin’ .

Could you tell the people over at Confluence that the outcry over Prop 8 is a movement against Obama and the Democrats as usual. They seem to think the GLB community is some hotbed of Obamaism. Please get the word out.
