If the rumors are true, and Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand has been selected to replace Hillary in the US Senate, then both feminists and gay rights activists have cause to celebrate. Gillibrand certainly represents a contrast from the homophobic, sexist, fauxgressive Obama Democrats and their choice for the post, Caroline Kennedy. It also gives hope that there is at least some opposition to that wing of the party, and that there may be a chance to save the Democratic party yet. And on top of everything else, Gillibrand seems to truly be a friend to the gay community. From The Washington Blade:
Alan Van Capelle, executive director of Empire State Pride Agenda, was quoted in the New York Daily News on Friday as saying that he discussed with Gillibrand on Thursday night where she stands on gay issues.
“I am very happy to say that New York is poised to have its first U.S. Senator who supports marriage equality for same-sex couples,” Van Capelle said. “She also supports the full repeal of the [Defense of Marriage Act], repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and passage of legislation outlawing discrimination against transgender people.”
Congratulations to Ms. Gillibrand and the people of New York, and a sincere Thank You to Gov. Paterson.
